The Red Pencil By: Andrea Davis Pinkney, 2014, Little Brown & Company
The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Shane W. Evans is a beautifully written novel told through the use of poetry. It is the story of a twelve-year-old girl named Amira living in Sudan. Amira and her family find themselves on a long journey to a refugee camp after the Janjaweed militia enters the town they had been living in. When on this journey Amira receives the gift a red pencil from an old woman, which conveys a sense of hope to her. All the sudden, the world is Amira’s and every impossibility is suddenly possible to her again. The target reader for this book would be for older children and young teens, between the ages of nine and fourteen. Kids who like poetry and stories about dreams and being inspired would especially enjoy The Red Pencil.
